Am I the Only One Not Drinking or Smoking? The Truth Behind the Teen Hype

Published on 3 October 2024 at 20:20

So, I stumbled on this YouTube video of a mother narrating how her 15-year-old daughter was asking her if she could go all the way from the USA to Germany just to party with her friends. Now, here’s the catch: in Germany, kids as young as 14 are allowed to drink beer and wine in public if they’re with an adult who gives the green light. Meanwhile, in the USA, you’ve got to be at least 18. So this girl figured, "If I can’t do it in the USA, I’ll just head to Germany and live it up."

It reminded me of a summer job I had as a waitress. One of my co-workers was super excited about turning 18. I asked her why, and she said, "Finally, I’m old enough to drink and smoke without hiding!" I was stunned. One time, she drank so much that she passed out on a toilet seat.

This all just goes to show the crazy hype surrounding alcohol and smoking among teenagers these days.

Dear Lyfteenites,

Have you ever felt like you're the odd one out because you don’t smoke or drink? Like, when everyone around you is doing it, but you're just there, wondering if you're missing something? Well, let me tell you you're not alone. In fact, not drinking or smoking is probably one of the best decisions you’re making right now.

Let's get real for a second. The "cool" factor that gets attached to smoking and drinking is pretty overrated, and honestly, a bit ironic. We see ads and celebrities flaunting this lifestyle, but the truth? The health risks are serious, and deep down, we all know it. The funny (and sad) part is that even cigarette packs themselves say, "Smokers are liable to die young." I mean, think about it. Why would anyone willingly do something that comes with a warning label? It’s like buying something that says, "Use this, and it’ll harm you." Sounds wild, right?

The data backs it up too. Studies show that around 90% of smokers started before they turned 18, and most wish they could quit today. Also, did you know that alcohol-related deaths among young people have been rising? Not to mention, alcohol can lead to issues like liver disease, depression, and even addiction. It's not just "fun" in the moment, it can leave long-lasting scars.

Here’s the hidden truth no one talks about: when you say “no” to these things, you're the strong one. It takes real guts to stand firm and not give in to the hype. Even in the Bible, we're reminded to take care of our bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honour God with your bodies." Your health and your body are precious, so don’t trade them for a momentary high.

I know it’s hard when it feels like you're the only one not drinking or smoking. But the truth is, there are more people like you than you realise, people who are quietly choosing health, clarity, and self-respect over the empty buzz. Here are books for you to boost your understanding and practical help that may save either you or a friend:

In the end, what’s really cool is standing for something that makes you better. You are not missing out; rather, you’re winning. And one day, when others face the consequences of their choices, you'll be grateful you chose to live differently.

Stay true to yourself. You are stronger than the hype.

With love,
